![]() ![]() So I am happily (and miserably) wading through a scrumptious, literary bliss that only Paullina Simons can serve I am rereading The Bronze Horseman series. My memory is pretty sketchy when we're talking about last week's meatloaf or teriyaki chicken, let alone a series I read in 2011. And l et's face it I am not getting any younger. However, seven years have passed since I read The Bronze Horseman, so a few of the details have gone by my brain's proverbial wayside, making it fair game in the "new to me" department. One could say I am slave to the element of surprise. I have never been a big fan of rereading a book series, no matter how life-altering. ~Peter Lewis from The Daily Mail on Anna Reid's Leningrad Tragedy of a City Under Siege 1941-1944 Starvation on such a scale makes one feel almost guilty for having enough and to spare." ![]() "During the days I was reading this book I ate comparitively little. ![]() ![]() Almost impossible to catch.īut if you should be lucky enough, or skilled enough, to capture such a prize, the god will be forced to grant a wish. The sky was slate gray and a blizzard was being heralded across the land by the chilling howls of the hounds, the thunder of hooves. Or, I should say, the true beginning was in the beforetimes, when monsters roamed freely outside the veil that now separates them from mortals, and demons sometimes fell in love.īut for our purposes, it started during that Endless Moon. ![]() Our story began on the winter solstice nineteen years ago, during a rare Endless Moon. I’m hoping to have both maps ready to go by April so I can include them in the next ebook. We’re also going to do a map of the capital, since lots of the adventures take place in the city, but I need to re-read the books first and make note of all the districts and landmarks mentioned (note to self: in the future, make a map as you go, even if it’s ugly as sin and no one else will ever see it). Some of the cities and terrain in the south will be appearing in the next couple of books (EE4 has a big train adventure and there might even be some flight…). The city of Memphis, Tennessee, was particularly hard hit: Of the approximately twenty thousand who didn't flee the city, seventeen thousand contracted the fever, and more than five thousand died-the equivalent of a million New Yorkers dying in an epidemic today. Moving up the Mississippi River in the late summer, in the span of just a few months the fever killed more than eighteen thousand people. While the American South had grown to expect a yellow fever breakout almost annually, the 1878 epidemic was without question the worst ever. ![]() ![]() A sparkling mixture of learning, humor, and style, Mirror, Mirror examines what great thinkers have said about self-love-from Aristotle, Cicero, and Erasmus to Rousseau, Adam Smith, Kant, and Iris Murdoch. Drawing on philosophy, psychology, literature, history, and popular culture, Blackburn offers an enlightening and entertaining exploration of self-love, from the myth of Narcissus and the Christian story of the Fall to today's self-esteem industry. But are narcissism and vanity really as bad as they seem? Can we avoid them even if we try? In Mirror, Mirror, Simon Blackburn, the author of such best-selling philosophy books as Think, Being Good, and Lust, says that narcissism, vanity, pride, and self-esteem are more complex than they first appear and have innumerable good and bad forms. The vain are by turns annoying or absurd, offending us whether they are blissfully oblivious or proudly aware of their behavior. ![]() Everyone deplores narcissism, especially in others. ![]() ![]() ![]() Or I could do my damned best to try and reach all of the lovely urban fantasy fans out there and say 'Hey, I wrote a novel.
